The ‘Boat Boys’ were asked if they would create a replica signalling mast to be placed at Berry Head to replace the Look-out pole that had been there previously.  This mast is to be used in an event to mark Napoleon’s visit to Torbay in 1815.

Once the event is over the mast will be converted into a look-out post by removing the top past, shortening the main mast and adding foot pieces.

The timber for the mast and spar was cfelled in the wood near Churston Quay. This timber was then extracted by horse and dragged to the beach from where it was lashed to a boat that took it around Berry Head, into the River Dart and finally being off loaded in the “Dolphin Boat Yard” at Galmpton Creek.

Below are pictures showing the sequence of events.
